Character Planning
We know your characters are all prisoners. However, there should be more to them than that...
What was I before?
What was the character's profession before? Here are some ideas although they are not all that's available.
- Naval starship crewer, or officer?
- Merchantile spacer?
- Tramp trader, Han Solo style, with or without a sideline in piracy?
- A soldier, fighting wars on planets either for a government or a mercenary company?
- A marine, one of the elite soldiers carried on starships for assaults on planets and boarding other starships?
- An explorer or contact specialist, pushing the boundaries of known space?
- A planetary law enforcer, flatfoot, detective, riot policeman?
- An aviator, flying or crewing atmospheric aicraft?
- A systems defence spacer, part of the crew of the system defence boats that guard star systems from attack?
- A scientist, whether corporate and part of some terrible consipracy or lone driven inventor?
- A belter (meteor miner), self-sufficient loner?
- A doctor, Bones McCoy or Skinpin?
- A journalist , hunting that killer story or writing a book?
- A career criminal, or space pirate?
What went wrong?
Obviously, life for your character has gone downhill sharply at some point. What might have happened? Some ideas.
- Some trauma or life-event radically changed your goals and motivations
- You became envious of others' success compared to your lack of it (assumes a fairly unsuccessful character generation!)
- You were doing something illicit 'on the side' that got found out about
- You're a bad lad through and through, and got found out
- You caught someone else doing something illicit, and made bad enemies
What crime am I in here for?
Nobody gets exiled to a prison planet for shoplifting. Whatever you were convicted of, it was very serious, up to and including Imperial High Justice crimes (things like genocide, use of nuclear weapons on sentients, treason, murdering a noble, piracy of Imperial vessels, being a psionic and so on)
Did I do it?
Generally, prisoners on Odegra will be genuinely guilty of the crimes for which they're convicted. However, the only faultless justice system in known space is that of the Zhodani (who read people's minds to check), and miscarriages of justice do happen. Based on the above results, you probably have a feel for whether your character should really be here or not.
What will I do when I get out?
This may vary by why you're here in the first place. Some possibilities.
- Hide somewhere to avoid recapture
- Get a new identity, possibly a new face, and go back into business
- Go dig up The Treasure
- Go get revenge on the law-abiding who caught you
- Go get revenge on the law-breakers who framed you/mixed you up
- Clear your name and reclaim your life/position/possessions/lover/inheritance
- Rescue the other poor bastards dying down the mines
